If you’re a bit baffled by the numerous types of sunglasses on the market, fear not.  The top six styles are described below:

  1. Wayfarers – Designed by Ray Ban, Wayfarers have a plastic frame, and trapezoidal lenses that are narrower at the bottom than at the top. They are an iconic style that has only increased in popularity since they were released in 1956.
  2. Oversized – Oversized sunglasses have large lenses and frames, and are especially good for sunburn protection around the eye area. They have a more futuristic feel than other forms of eyewear, and especially suit people with rounder faces.
  3. Wraparounds – Most commonly used in athletic circumstances, wraparounds have a smooth semi circle face, and provide great eye protection for sports people. They first made an appearance in the 1960’s, and are the default eyewear for sports like snowboarding and skiing.
  4. Teashades – Especially popular during the 1920’s and 30’s, Teashades were made even more popular by John Lennon. Guaranteed to provide wearers with a vintage, cool look, they look especially good on people with strong jaw lines.
  5. Aviators – Developed in the 1930’s by Ray Ban, aviators are now often worn by police personnel, and the Unites States military. They have metal frames and teardrop shaped lenses, and have been a popular design with people throughout the ages.  Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Freddie Mercury have all worn this style over the years.
  6. Unisex – several of the well known sunglasses brands have recently been designing unisex sunglasses which look great on both men and women. These sunglasses are available in a variety of frame materials, such as metal or plastic, and in a variety of innovative and traditional designs.

Eye Protection is Key

Whilst everyone wants to look good, it’s important not to sacrifice eye protection for fashion.  Of course, any type of sunglasses is better than none at all, but the quality of eye protection should still be a critical consideration.  When looking for a pair of sunglasses, look for some that offer at least 95% protection versus UV rays.  UV radiation increases the likelihood of burns, cataracts, and even some types of cancer.  Quality sunglasses can protect versus all of these.

Sunglasses are a popular summer accessory, but they are just as useful during the winter months as well, especially in areas that see a lot of snow.  Offering vital protection versus UV radiation, and making it easier to see in bright light, these are a fashion accessory that are as functional as they are stylish!
