We all need outdoor space. It’s a place to relax on a warm day, a place for the kids to let off some steam, and a place for our pets to enjoy some fresh air and play time. There are lots of different things you can do to make your garden a better place, but adding a patio or deck will increase your living space and add value to your home. So which one offers the most benefits?
In lots of respects patios and decks are very similar. After all, both are places where you can put a table and chairs, or a BBQ. Both can also be connected to the house, but that is where the similarities end.
The Difference Between Decks and Patios
Patios are built directly on the ground. A patio can be constructed from several different materials, but paving stones, tiles or bricks are the most common. Patios need to be built on a foundation made from concrete. You don’t have to build a patio adjacent to the house; patios can be constructed anywhere – at the bottom of the garden or around a pool.
Decks are normally made of wood and unlike patios, are not built directly onto the ground. Even though a deck can be built adjacent to a ground floor room, constructing a deck is also a popular way of adding outdoor living space to an upper level room – often a bedroom. Decks will be enclosed within a railing if built at a higher level.
The cost of installing a brand-new deck or patio will depend on a variety of different factors, including materials used and whether you do any of the work yourself. The larger the addition, the more money it will cost. Building at a higher level will also be more expensive; as will any extra modifications you need to make, for example if you want to add a brand-new door out onto your patio or deck. Extra features such as railings or built-in BBQs will also add to the cost of the project.
Patio or Deck?
If your garden is 100% level, you can choose a patio or a deck, but if you are building on a slope or the ground is very uneven, a deck will be a better option because it is constructed on supports above ground. Decking is also a better choice if you want to take advantage of your views since it can be constructed at height.
Patios are a better choice if you want your seating and entertainment area to blend seamlessly into the garden. Building a patio allows you to be more creative with the materials you use. You can choose from a wide range of different paving stones and other hard surfaces, whereas with a deck you are stuck with wood. Decks will also require more maintenance than a patio, since wood needs to be treated every few years in order to protect it from the elements.
